I don't know if the problem is under control and what you have in place to combat it.
I run a few big forums and we use Stop Forum Spam along with a few other mods that aren't compatible with phpbb.
Hope this can help a bit.

Yes, I use Stop Forum Spam to identify the spammers, but have not yet got around to implementing the mod to automatically filter.

Looks like you have it under control, we had to use cloudflare when they started to DDoS one of our sites.

It's a bit of a slog, but there are only usually 3-4 new spam members a day most easily identified. Few of them post, if they do it is only once, and of course the first 10 posts have to be approved anyway.
