Kentucky Colonels was a good guess (esp. given the recent Kentucky theme), and they were indeed an ABA team, but as you mentioned, it is not the correct answer. Since you mentioned you looked it up...even though it was before my time...you probably weren't TOO surprised at the city anyway...given my taste in sports teams! Ha ha ha!

The funny thing is that the losing team, was from New Orleans. The city you are in now.
But no the city did not surprise me.

The Pittsburgh Pipers is absolutely correct and they did indeed defeat the New Orleans Buccaneers! I didn't think who??? Would be TOO surprised when he saw it was a Pittsburgh team! Ha ha ha!

Since it's Friday anyway, here is today's question:

The world's first commercial radio station calls Pittsburgh home...what are it's call letters?

Didn't he ask this same question somewhere else?

Which is probably why I remember it.

KDKA is absolutely correct! And it was indeed founded by Westinghouse (now owned by CBS Radio)! And yes, "he" did ask this question elsewhere before! Ha ha ha! Since it is the segue to my next question, I went with it anyway. Ha ha ha!

Speaking of which, stay tuned for Saturday's question...the topic tomorrow is KDKA 1020 AM!

The question tomorrow will be kinda hard without Google...BUT, if anyone gets it without Google...I'll be incredibly impressed! I may have mentioned this elsewhere...not sure...but yeah...kinda tough without Google! Ha ha ha! I won a contest in the late 80s early 90s and part of the prize was getting to co-host (for one episode) a sports talk show that aired on KDKA at the time (3 hours long on Sundays), so I got to learn a bit about KDKA's history...so think KDKA history! Ha ha ha!

So long from NOLA...heading home this afternoon!

Here is your question for Saturday:

When KDKA first took to the airwaves on November 2, 1920, what was the purpose of that very first radio broadcast?

Like I said, it is a tougher than usual question...but, even without Google, one might be able to reason this one out. If not, there's always Google! Ha ha ha!

To broadcast the November 1920 election returns which, I assume, were those that saw the election of that great President Warren Gamaliel Harding :D

On November 2, 1920, station KDKA made the nation's first commercial broadcast (a term coined by Conrad himself). They chose that date because it was Election Day and the power of radio was proven when people could hear the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race before they read about it in the newspaper.

The 1920 Presidential Election Results (Harding defeated Cox) is absolutely correct!

Stay tuned Sunday for the next question...the topic tomorrow: Warren G. Harding

Here is your question for Sunday:

What was the name of the major scandal that rocked the Presidency of Warren G. Harding?

As his name had come up whilst I was watching Boardwalk Empire, I looked him up the other day. The major scandal that hit was to do with oil reserves, which was mostly uncovered only after his death. There was also the Ohio Gang - friends to whom he gave influential financial positions.

That's the one. Couldn't think. It had to do with the shape of the hill covering the oil reserves, or something like that.

The Tea Pot Dome Scandal is correct & it did indeed deal with oil reserves & the geography of the land in question. Of course Harding died of a heart attack mid-way through his 1st term & much of the scandal came to light after his death as Larss stated.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the next question. Monday's topic: Oil!

Here is your question for Monday:

A United States Law, the "Sherman Antitrust Act," led to the breakup of what major oil company into several smaller oil companies?

Standard Oil is absolutely correct!

Stay tuned tomorrow for the next question! Tuesday's topic: Standard Oil.

Of course, in light of recent "developments" I will be making it a two part question! Ha ha ha! I suspect you might already know the answer to one of the parts! ;)
