Post subject:  Re: Who knows?

The picture is correct.

1 Knows.

This is a sort of "Wingding" - we have a thread full of these somewhere.

1 (One - sounds like Won) is next to or "by" a Knows (sounds like nose). So the answer to the cryptic question is "Won by a nose", which is a well know English phrase, originating from horse racing, where the winner of a very close race can be said to have won by a nose.

New riddle:

On the table before you are 9 metal balls, all 1 centimeter in diameter. All the same colour, but one weighs a little more than the others. Next to them is a chemists scale:

Image

Question:

Howmany times do you have to put one or several of the balls on the scales to find out, which of the balls is the different one? And: How?

Author:  Riccardo [ September 28th, 2018, 7:48 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Who knows?

If I have luck I need only one try:

4 balls on each side of the scale. If the scales are in balance the 9th ball is the heavier one :weigh2: :winner:

If the scales are not in balance I need a new plan though... :mossies:

Post subject:  Re: Who knows?

With new plan I need 2tries to find out:

1. Put 3 balls on each side of the scales. If they are in balance, the heavier ball must be one of the 3 not weighed ones. If they are not in balance the heavier ball must be one of the 3 on the scales side going down.

2. So you have sortet out the group of 3 balls which contains the heavier one. Take two of these balls and put one on each side of the scales. If they are in balance the 3rd one must be the heavier. If they are not in balance and one side is going down you also have found out which one is the heavier one :explain:
