I have come across a number of lateral thinking exercises over the years, and I thought that I may just post one or two here to give you something to think about.

A man has a flat on the 20th floor of his building. Going to work each morning he gets into the lift and rides it to the ground floor. When he arrives home in the evening, he again takes the lift. On some days he takes the lift all the way to the 20th floor, but on other days he takes the lift to the 12th floor and walks the rest of the way. He does not get off early to meet anyone, and he does not do it for fitness reasons. There is nothing wrong with the lift.
Why does he not always take the lift all the way to the 20th floor?

I WILL BE POSTING THE SOLUTION IN A SEPARATE THREAD ON WEDNESDAY

Very interesting Larss but I think most members tend to do their lateral thinking under a bar stool after having had a few too many pints at the pub.

My initial guess would be that this guy has a second flat on the 12 floor. Either way I think he is an idiot because the dungeon is in the basement and he could be having some great fun down there with Miss H.

NO, he has only one flat and it is on the 20th floor. When he gets out of the lift on the 12th he goes straight to the stairs and climbs them to the 20th.

Having just seen that hot GIF Diamond posted, I have figured out why this guy has chosen to climb the stairs.

Maybe some days it becomes too full for his liking by the time it reaches floor 12.

....or,it's something to do with the next floor being the thirteenth, regardless of what it may be numbered.

Nothing to do with floor numbers.
Good idea on the lift too full, but no.

I refer back to a previous post -
Quote:

Like your thinking though.

Since we have established that he does not have two separate flats in the same building then I am left to conclude that we are talking about two flats in two different buildings. Before I give myself any more of a headache with this I need to know just how many cases of chablis I win with a correct answer.

He has only one flat.
Bad smells do not drive him out of the lift.
In the times that he does not travel to the 20th floor, he will always get out on the 12th.

No. In the morning he leaves his flat on the 20th floor and takes the lift to the ground. In the evening, when he returns, he catches the lift on the ground floor.

You mentioned that he never gets off early, but you never said whether or not he works late.

With that in mind,I have two guesses, the first of which I'll post now:

After a certain time in the evening, the elevators are locked down from floor 12 up due to security concerns. The floors up to and including 12 house businesses which remain open late (clubs, bars).

Any access needed to floors above 12 can be had by way of stairs, and a security card (key-card) which will unlock the door to the stairs.

No, you're not thinking laterally enough. The block is a normal residential block of flats. (Maybe a bit unusual in that the lift always works).

NOTE TO ALL - I will be posting the solution in a separate thread tomorrow

Fine.

EDIT - The correct answer was given here - I have moved it to another thread in case anyone else wants to keep going. END EDIT

How's that for "laterally enough"? :P

The answer is posted but I want to keep working on this. In the future I would like the problems posted Mondays with a clue added each day until Friday when the solutions are posted along with a list of members who figured it out.
