So here we are.......it's a simple format. I will give you an archive headline from a corresponding week. All you have to do is guess the correct year. As the quiz will only appear over weekends, you will be given some more questions relating to the headline just to keep you busy.

I will also list the UK Top 5 chart for the corresponding week, only one of the songs will be missing. To help you guess the song, I will give you the lyrics.

So are you ready, then here we go.....enjoy

Thin Lizzy Star Dies

Phil Lynott, the former lead singer of the rock band Thin Lizzy, has died from heart failure and pneumonia after an 11-day fight for his life.

The 36-year-old rock star had been admitted to Salisbury Hospital in Wiltshire with a serious kidney and liver infection on Christmas Day, after he collapsed from a drink and drug binge at his home in Surrey.

His estranged wife, Caroline, had rushed to help him, driving 100 miles (160km) from her house in Bath to his mansion in Kew.

She drove him first to a specialist drugs clinic in Wiltshire, where doctors recommended that he should be admitted to Salisbury's intensive care unit.

Icons from the music world have been giving tributes to the singer and bassist who escaped the poverty of his Dublin childhood by launching a music career.

The group found fame in the 1970s with hits like The Boys Are Back In Town released in 1976 and Dancing in the Moonlight in 1977.

The band split up in 1984 to allow Lynott to go it alone.

His albums, Solo in Soho released in 1980 and The Philip Lynott Album which came out two years later, failed to sell well and his solo career never really got off the ground.

The singer always led a flamboyant rock-and-roll lifestyle.

As he struggled to deal with the pressures of his career and problems in his personal life he became involved in drug and alcohol abuse.

a) What was the year?
b) Before forming Thin Lizzy, in which groups did Phil Lynott serve his apprenticeship? (name 3)
c) In which year did he found Thin Lizzy?
d) Name their first hit.
e) Throughout the 1970s and until the group split up in 1984, the band's membership continued to change. Can you name one of the band members who is more famous as the front man of another group who had their biggest hits in the 1980's?

UK Top 5 from week 4 January

1. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE - SHAKIN' STEVENS
2. ??? - ???
3. WEST END GIRLS - PET SHOP BOYS
4. DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? - BAND AID
5. WALKING IN THE AIR - ALED JONES

Lyrics.....

A few stolen moments is all that we share
You've got your family, and they need you there
Though I've tried to resist, being last on your list
But no other man's gonna do

Looking at the top five FM and I think the year a) could be 1985.

Excellent quiz H. :bravo

a) As Band Aid was 1984, I assume that that is the year.

---edit----
Just realised that it must be 1985 as PK says as we are now in January AFTER the end of the year :fp:

Pasty, FM & Mr L...........wrong.

I like the deduction re Band Aid - and you're correct, it was released in 1984 and it was No.1 for a number of weeks when it was first released but in our particular chart it isn't. Maybe it was re-released.....?

Well then, I'd guess 1986  I don't think "West End Girls" can be later than that.

d) I think is "Whiskey In The Jar".

e) is Midge Ure and the other band is Ultravox, though he was also the lead singer in '70s one hit wonder, Bay City Rollers wannabe boyband, Slik.

Paul

Phil died in 1986. I was only discussing it at Christmas, when I met one of my friends who wrote to me and told me about it while I was in Beirut at the time. No email or mobile phones in those days.

The only previous bands I remember him was The Grey Eagles and Skid Row (a Dublin band, not the US heavy metal band)

Thin Lizzy were originally formed in 1969

First major hit was "Whiskey in the jar"

I'll have to think about the past member......there are quite a few of them. Ah, I see Paul has got it

So we have our first correct answers from Paul & 1BB :2Thumbs: :2Thumbs:

a) The year in question was indeed 1986
b) Lynott was in the Black Eagles, Skid Row & Orphanage before Thin Lizzy
c) Thin Lizzy was formed in 1969
d) Whisky in the Jar was their first hit
e) Midge Ure was part of the group in 1979-1980 before leaving to form Ultravox

That just leave the lyrics open. As a clue it was the Christmas No.1 in 1985

Man arrested for Ripper murders

A 35-year-old lorry driver from Bradford, suspected of carrying out a number of murders across West Yorkshire over the past five years, has appeared in court.

Peter William Sutcliffe, of 6 Garden Lane, Bradford, is accused of murdering 20-year-old university student Jacqueline Hill, who was killed in Leeds seven weeks ago.

Sutcliffe, who was also charged with the theft of two number plates, was remanded in custody for eight days by magistrates in Dewsbury today.

Miss Hill is the latest victim in a spate of murders across West Yorkshire.

Following Sutcliffe's arrest in Sheffield last Friday, police told reporters they were confident they had apprehended the notorious Yorkshire Ripper.

a) Name the Year
b) How many murders were attributed to Peter Sutcliffe?
c) What drove him to commit the murders?

UK Singles Chart

1. ??? by ???
2. (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON
3. STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE
4. HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER) - JOHN AND YOKO / THE PLASTIC ONO BAND WITH THE HARLEM COMMUNITY CHOIR
5. SUPER TROUPER - ABBA

Lyrics......

And I know you will agree
That she always is a friend to you
And she's a friend to me

Is it 1981? John Lennon was killed in December 1980 and his records dominated the charts for a while after that, so I would guess that the number 1 spot was "Imagine".

I think there were 13 murders in total.

Was it voices or a message from God that he claimed told him to do it?

Between Mr L and 1BB we are nearly there....

1981 is correct and 1BB is right with 13 and the voice of God.

However it was not John Lennon topping the charts........and I actually know one of the members of the chart topping 'Choir'
