Perhaps this is an old one, but I enjoyed it, so here goes;

A mailman walks up to a house that he's been delivering mail to for quite some years.
The lady of the house is in the front garden.
Since the mailman has been delivering there for quite some time, he knows the lady has 3 daughters. Yet, he doesn't know their ages.

The woman gives him a clue, in riddle form;
When you multiply all their ages, the result is 36. (For you math geeks, that's n1 x n2 x n3)

As you may realise, the mailmad was as clueless as anyone, since there are quite some possibilities.

A second clue sounded;
When you add all the ages of the girls, you get the house number. (That's n1 + n2 + n3)

Surprisingly, the mailman was still clueless.

A third and final clue was given;
the oldest one is learning to play the piano.

As for all you (hopefully clueles) people, there are some rules.

1; This is solve-able.
2; When you answer, you must give a valid reason, rather than a lucky guess.
3; Twins are allowed if you want, aswell as adopted girls, they still count as daughters.
The question to you lots: What are all three girls' ages?

The house number isn't mentioned.
And yes, the fact that it is not mentioned is part of the riddle.

Factorising all the possible combinations is only the first part.

Using the first clue, we know that the girls'ages could be :

1) 1;1;36
2) 1;2;18
3) 1;3;12
4) 1;4;9
5) 1;6;6
6) 2;2;9
7) 2;3;6
8) 3;3;4

With the second clue : The mailman knows the number of the house (let's call it X) and the sum of the ages is :

1) 38
2) 21
3) 16
4) 14
5) 13
6) 13
7) 11
8) 10

With those clues, the mailman cannot answer ans he needs another clue. That means that the number of the house is X=13 because only two additions are equals.

The third clue shows us that there is the oldest daughter and two younger sisters (or twins) because the mother uses "oldest" instead of "older". So the only solution is 2;2;9.

Is that right ?
