Inserting a tree is too dangerous for the UK. In the rest of the world it is safe they have more pressing matters to deal with.

21 December ????

Jumbo jet crashes onto Lockerbie

A Pan Am jumbo jet with 258 passengers on board has crashed on to the town of Lockerbie near the Scottish borders.

Initial reports indicate it crashed into a petrol station in the centre of the town, between Carlisle and Dumfries, and burst into a 300-foot fireball.

Hundreds are feared dead as airline officials said flight 103 was about two-thirds full with 255 adults and three children on board.

Rescue teams have confirmed there are many casualties at the scene including townspeople who were on the ground.

Shortly after 1900 the flight disappeared from radar screens at Prestwick Air Traffic Control Centre.

At 1908 there were reports by the Civil Air Traffic Control Authorities of an explosion on the ground 15 miles north of the Scottish border.

Details of the accident are still unclear but there are unconfirmed reports the plane has ploughed into cars and houses.

An eyewitness said the aircraft has hit a central part of the town in a residential area.
"There was just a terrible explosion, you just couldn't describe it," he told the BBC.

"It is just impossible to approach the town but at the time it went up there was a terrible explosion and the whole sky lit up.

"It was virtually raining fire - it was just liquid fire."

Parts of the town are being evacuated and a hall has been converted into a refuge centre.

Dumfries and Galloway Hospital, about 20 miles away, is on emergency alert.

Ambulances from southern Scotland and Cumbria have been sent to the scene.

The RAF has sent personnel and helicopters from Scotland and Northern England, along with mountain rescue teams to help police.

The A74 has been cordoned off after police reported several parked cars on fire.

It is thought the plane would have been flying at about 31,000 ft over Lockerbie when it exploded.

a) Where was the flight from and where was it headed?
b) Who was finally jailed for the bombing?

25 December ????

Gorbachev resigns as Soviet Union breaks up

Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union for almost seven years and executive president for nearly two, has stepped down from office.

He announced his resignation in a 10 minute speech, broadcast live on television, as the Soviet Union passed into history.

It has been replaced by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The 60-year-old appeared solemn but composed.

"Due to the situation which has evolved as a result of the formation of the Commonwealth of Independent states I hereby discontinue my activities at the post of president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics," he said.

He said he was resigning on a matter of principle, adding the decision to dismantle the state should have been made "on the basis of popular will".

Mr Gorbachev, highly regarded abroad but not at home, listed his achievements.

"Free elections have become a reality. Free press, freedom of worship, representative legislatures and a multi-party system have all become a reality," he said.

Human rights, free enterprise and the removal of nuclear threat were also now in place, he said.

He added that some mistakes had been made but ended by offering his best wishes to the people.

The Soviet red flag, bearing the hammer and sickle, was lowered over the Kremlin and in its place the Russian Federation's tricolour was raised.

It was an image mirrored at Soviet embassies around the world.

US president George Bush, who was told of the changes by Mr Gorbachev by telephone, joined other world leaders in paying tribute to him.

America is expected to recognise the existence of Russia tomorrow.

British Prime Minister John Major, speaking at Chequers, said Mr Gorbachev helped make the world a safer place.

a) What were Gorbachev’s two principal policies?
b) What is the english translation of these policies?
c) Who became the first President of the Russian Federation?

The UK Top 5 selling singles for that same week were…….

1. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES - QUEEN
2. ???
3. JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT - KLF FEAT. TAMMY WYNETTE
4. WHEN YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME - DIANA ROSS
5. LIVE AND LET DIE - GUNS N' ROSES

Can you name the missing song & artist from the lyrics below…..

I can't light no more of your darkness
All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
I'm growing tired and time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life

That was the week that was…..but what was the year?

Well done to Pasty & Mr L

Perestroika & glasnost mean restructuring & openness respectively.

That just leaves the song to get :search:

I'm afraid, as this is the last weekend of the year, it is also the last quiz question of the year in this thread

27 December ????

Star Wars fever hits Britain

Thousands of people are flocking to cinemas in the UK to watch the long-awaited blockbuster, Star Wars - a movie which is already setting US box offices alight.

Bracing the cold weather, young and old queued from 0700 GMT in London at the Dominion, and Leicester Square cinemas, to snatch up non-reserved tickets which are otherwise booked until March.

Star Wars, which was first released in America seven months ago, has taken audiences by storm and outstripped last year's blockbuster Jaws to gross $156m (£108m) at the box office.

Carrie Fisher, Sir Alec Guiness and little known Harrison Ford star in this fairytale set in space.

Produced by Gary Kurtz, written and directed by George Lucas who directed American Graffitti, the U-classified sci-fi film is a classic epic of good versus evil.

It has enthralled audiences under a dazzle of special effects with wizards, heroes, monsters in "a galaxy far, far away".

The 900 people involved in the film included giants, dwarfs, artists and the man who built machines for James Bond.

Many of the optical special effects were developed in California by Industrial Light and Magic, a George Lucas company. The on-stage special effects were put together at Elstree studios in Britain.

Filming took the cast to Tunisia, Death Valley California, Guatemala and the EMI soundstage at Elstree.

The build-up and hype has led to store wars over Star Wars with products including T-shirts, sweets, jigsaw puzzle, watches and food to name but a few.

Mr Lucas has published a paperback version and Marvel comics have produced a special edition to meet the thirst for Star Wars' merchandise.

But for those queuing today nothing will satisfy them but a chance to see the film itself - easy targets for touts trying to sell £2.20 tickets for £30.

a) What was the name of Princess Leia’a home planet that was destroyed by the Death Star?
b) What was the name of Han Solo’s space ship?
c) What character did Peter Cushing play in Star Wars?

The UK Top 5 selling singles for that same week were…….

1. ???
2. THE FLORAL DANCE - BRIGHOUSE AND RASTRICK BRASS BAND
3. HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE - BEE GEES
4. I WILL - RUBY WINTERS
5. WHITE CHRISTMAS - BING CROSBY

Can you name the missing song & artist from the lyrics below

Far have i traveled and much have i seen
Dark distant mountains with valleys of green.
Past painted deserts the sunset's on fire

That was the week that was…..but what was the year?
