Tories choose Major for Number 10

John Major is to be Britain's new prime minister after winning the Conservatives' leadership election.

Mr Major, 47, will visit the Queen at 1030 BST tomorrow to be formally appointed and will return to Downing Street as the youngest British leader this century.

Mr Major did not achieve the majority required for an absolute victory, but the margin was clear enough for his rivals to withdraw and a third ballot was avoided.

Mr Major - who has been in parliament for only 11 years - said he was enormously encouraged so many had voted for him and would discharge his responsibilities to the best of his ability.

Current Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher resigned after Michael Heseltine challenged her for the leadership and close friends said she would lose.

Mr Major received 185 votes, Mr Heseltine 131, and the third candidate trailed in with just 56.

The Huntingdon MP was just three votes short of an absolute majority.

But within minutes of the results being read out both Mr Major's challengers withdrew from the contest.

Mr Heseltine said it had been a campaign fought between colleagues without rancour and one which laid the foundations of unity in the party.

Mrs Thatcher also endorsed the new leader, saying she was thrilled with the choice.
"I want everyone in the party to rally behind him," she said.

Mr Major said he looked forward to leading the party to further victories.

"We're going to unite totally and absolutely and we're going to win the next general election," he said.

a) What was Major’s position in the Cabinet prior to becoming PM?
b) The outcome of the ballot was announced by the chairman of which influential Tory backbench Committee?
c) Who was the third runner in the election race?

From the responses above  I assume the tune is the original Righteous Brothers version which I think was used in "Ghost"...but I could be wrong!

Graham Hill killed in air crash

One of Britain's greatest motor racing drivers has been killed in a plane crash in south-east England.

Graham Hill, 46, who retired from the sport in July was killed instantly along with the four other occupants in his Piper Aztec - all members of the Embassy Hill team.

Hill was piloting the plane when he clipped a row of trees on Arkley golf course in Hertfordshire, just before 2200 GMT.

The two-times world champion was flying Embassy Hill manager Ray Brimble, fellow driver Tony Brise, and two mechanics from France to attend a party in London.

Arley Golf Club steward Ted Dickins said visibility had been very poor at the time of the accident.

"It was terrible - the ambulances couldn't even see the bunkers as they were driving down," he said.

Friend and Elstree Aero Club chairman Spencer Flack said the champion driver was taking a risk by trying to land in bad conditions but told reporters he was an experienced flier.

"He was a skilful pilot who tried to get in and failed.

"In those conditions it's just a matter of feet and seconds between life and death," he said.

Government accident investigation officials are sifting through the wreckage to try to establish the cause of the crash.

Hill is the only driver to have won the Triple Crown of the Indianapolis 500, the 24 hours of Le Mans and the Formula One World Championship.

Hill retired from Formula 1 mid-season so he could concentrate on coaching Brise, a promising new driver in his own fledgling team Embassy Hill.

a) In which years was Hill World Champion?
b) Who did he drive for to win the Championships?
c) In what year did Hill’s son, Damon, win the F1 World Championship?

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?

6th December ????

John Lennon shot dead
Former Beatle John Lennon has been shot dead by an unknown gunman who opened fire outside the musician's New York apartment.
The 40-year-old was shot several times as he entered the Dakota, his luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, opposite Central Park, at 2300 local time.

He was rushed in a police car to St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died.
His wife who is understood to have witnessed the attack, was with him.

Shots heard
A police spokesman said a suspect was in custody, but he had no other details of the shooting.
"This was no robbery," the spokesman said, adding that Mr Lennon was probably shot by a "deranged" person.
Witness reports say at least three shots were fired and others have claimed they heard six.
There are also reports Mr Lennon staggered up six steps into the vestibule after he was shot, before collapsing.
Jack Douglas, Lennon's producer, said he and the Lennons had been at a studio called the Record Plant in mid-town earlier in the evening and Lennon left at 2230.
Mr Lennon said he planned to have some dinner and then return home, Mr Douglas said.

Fans at scene
The Lennons are said to have left their limousine on the street and walked up the driveway when the gunman opened fire.
It is unclear whether the man had been lying in wait in the entrance to the building for Mr Lennon, or whether he came up behind him.
Witnesses describe the gunman as a "pudgy kind of man", 35 to 40 years old with brown hair.
Other former band members, Paul McCartney, guitarist George Harrison and drummer Ringo Starr are thought to have been informed of Lennon's murder.
Fans have already begun arriving at the scene, many still unaware Lennon has died.

Mr Lennon is survived by his wife, and two sons.

a) Who killed him.
b) Name both his wives.
c) Name is two sons.
