The stupid thing is that I had felt it was a bit tight after all the walking (mostly uphill) in Barcelona, but thought that I had got over it.
Obviously not! :flaccid:

Although I'm not actively participating in the get fit in 60 days since I'm the stat keeper, I thought it would be remiss if I didn't post what I was up to with my workout.

I hadn't worked out in 2 weeks due to visitors and since today is the start of my work week, I eased back in with a lighter workout.

I workout at home and only with dumbbells so weights are each.

Hammer curls 45lbs 3 sets of 15 reps

Floor press (like bench press but from the floor) 30 lbs 5 sets of 30 reps

Side shoulder raises 30 lbs 3 sets of 10 reps

I've been trying to keep weight more or less steady, while adding reps since that will add definition and aid in weight loss.
:fit: :somers: :weights: :workout:

Sounds like fun, Miss H. I could use some motivation; I'm a bit down because I can't test for black belt because of herniated disks at L4/L5 and L5/S1. I start physical therapy tomorrow, so the timing is good.

My usual routine is martial arts (did you ever figure out how to add that?) - American Kenpo, 1 to 2 hours of class plus an hour of sparring, 3 nights a week.

I'll get some measurements and weight in here tomorrow morning.

Looking forward to continued motivation...

I've never be in a regular martial arts class, so I need to ask some questions.

Are you moving constantly during class or sparing as if you would be if running or cycling?

If you are, I could just count it as a cardio workout by using the time.

If you are not, I could still count it as cardio but decrease the time by 1/2, 1/4 or something based on your experience.

Would this work? :dunno:
It likely depends on the type of art, and the instructor. But since you asked me, I'll use mine.
Typical class is:
15 minutes of warm-up - running a few laps, dynamic stretching, some sort of exercise to work on strength or speed. They vary it, so it doesn't get dull
30 minutes of "material" - working on a kata, a weapon kata, self-defense techniques. Probably a little more standing around, here, especially in the early stages of learning something. But the more you go over it, and the better you understand it, the more intensity/power/speed you put into it. I'd say it averages out.
15 minutes of cool-down. Mostly flexibility.

Typical sparring class starts like the above, but wearing all the gear (insurance requires protective pads - increases the weight, and ups the sweat factor - I'll go through 1 bottle of water in class, but 2 during sparring). Then there are drills/instruction on sparring techniques, strategies, combinations. There is a little bit of standing as you watch what the instructor wants you to do...but then you're doing it yourself. Repeatedly. Once the actual sparring begins, for us, it's light-to-medium combat, 1 point for punches, 2 points for kicks, and five point matches. The more of us there are, the more rings they start up, so no one is standing around more than a couple of minutes waiting for their next fight.

Did that help any?

I'm not sure how I'd translate that to cardio. It's not non-stop like running or cycling. Maybe more like aerobics? Most aerobics classes I've seen vary the pace.

V
I think I'll just create a new category under cardio for martial arts.

I think it'll be easier in the long run because there are just too many variables.

Thanks for the explanation and I hope your PT goes well so you can get back to it.

That was, indeed, very clever Riccardo! Also it quite a good display of talent.

I did try to think of other ways of wording it, but wether it was time or distance it was always a risk. :)

I haven't even managed to get tarted yet.
I reckon 2 weeks out with the calf muscle, but I'll see what else I can do meanwhile.
